A typical night in the United States is interrupted by several flashes of light in the distance. Shortly after that the power starts blinking. As the news spreads that a limited nuclear strike has been made against the power grid in the US, people go into panic and survival mode. There are runs on stores to purchase canned food, water, camping supplies, gas, and guns. When the power goes off and shows no sign of a quick return, the panic increases as people start leaving town.
While driving his son back from the store that night, Jason Ribault notices a yellow streak of light going across the sky. When he sees a contrail behind it, he tells his son that they need to get home to check the news. There he discovers that it was a missile and that several others had struck US soil. Jason is convinced that the town will soon be in chaos so he gathers his family together and starts organizing their evacuation. His plan is to launch his boat and take the family out to one of the islands off the coast where they can observe how the attack is going to affect the country.
What So Proudly We Hail is about the Ribault’s struggle to survive and the events that take place in the US after the “lights out” attack. The story tells of the powers that are seeking to take over the country and how citizens that remained in the country are dealing with no power and other threats.
Though written as fiction, What So Proudly We Hail gives the reader some things to think about and explore.
James Howard’s story is full of action and drama. Though the book was broken into chapters, it was frequently difficult to stop reading at the end of a chapter. I highly recommend this clean, family friendly book.
