My Journey to Spiritual Restoration

My Journey to Spiritual Restoration is the autobiography of Gurmay Darlington. In her book she shares about how she grew up in Guyana and her living conditions there. She tells of being poisoned by an older cousin when she was three months old. Ms. Darlington goes on to tell about the sexual and physical abuse she suffered as a child. In her autobiography, she describes how – with the help of God – she was able to endure many hardships and become a successful business owner living in the United States today.

Her story is touching and has the potential to be a rather inspirational book if not for a few things that I found rather distracting.

The first distraction that I encountered was the way that she chose to tell her story. The entire book is written in the third person. Throughout the book the author refers to herself as Darlington. While I realize that this is an accepted style of writing, I did find it made the book less enjoyable. I think the author could have connected better with her readers if she had written the book in the first person.

Ms. Darlington states in her book that she holds a Bachelor of Science degree and a Masters degree. Given her level of education, I was rather disappointed in the quality of her writing. The book is filled with grammatical errors that are common to those who are not well educated or did not grow up with English as their native language. Even though Ms. Darlington probably did not grow up speaking English, I would have expected her to have an editor look over the manuscript before publishing it.

Finally, I thought the book was poorly organized. Some of the chapters seemed out of order and several events seem to be repeated in multiple chapters. The fact that she was poisoned at three months old was mentioned at least three times in the book as well as on the back cover.

Gurmay Darlington has a story to tell that I feel is worth sharing. I think it is sad that she did not present her experiences better in My Journey to Spiritual Restoration. This could have easily been a 5 star book, but I feel the quality and presentation lowers it to 3 stars.

I thank you for your review to 'My Journey to Spiritual Restoration' . Your response represents only your thoughts. If appears that you were more distracted with the organization of how you thought that my book should have been. Is that because you couldn't deal with your real issues that has been stirred up since you've read my book? I highly recommend that you transform your mind and read it again to address your own issues and you will see your own  revelation that will spring forth.

I hope that I was clear in my review that your book has the potential to be a very inspiring book. Please notice that I did not say I doubted your honesty or sincerity. The truth is that I read your book three times before writing my review.

Most of my reviews take about 45 – 60 minutes to write. The review of your book took almost 2 hours. I was very careful to give you credit for your effort and respect you for what you have gone through. I also felt that I needed to bring out the things that I felt made the book difficult to read. If you decide to release a second edition, I hope that will you will consider some of the things that I said.

Thank you for your concern that your book may have stirred up some personal issues that I had supressed. Except for the fact that we worship the same God and both share a love for Him, our lives have been on two very different paths. I have not experienced any of the hardships that you shared in your book. Compared to the paths you have travelled, I have had a very easy life.

Thank you for the opportunity to read and review your book. I welcome the opportunity to read any future books that you write.
